Dateline, Fairfax, VA: Freshly Baked Handouts Forbidden in Fairfax - County Says Health Of Homeless Is at Issue

Under a tough new Fairfax County policy, residents can no longer donate food
prepared in their homes or a church kitchen -- be it a tuna casserole, sandwiches or even a batch of cookies -- unless the kitchen is approved by the county, health officials said yesterday.

They said the crackdown on home-cooked meals is aimed at preventing food poisoning among homeless people.

Homeless people may have a difficult time finding a good meal, but in Fairfax they can be sure that they won't get food poisoning. I could get food poisoning tonight when I go to Lone Star Steakhouse. Should that be banned? Should my home kitchen be certified? Are too many homeless people getting sick from free meals? What an insult to all the volunteers who have donated time, money, and effort to help out less fortunate people.

Ben, I agree, this is wrong.

At least, thanks to President Bush, these people will only lack food security, and not actually be hungry

I got food poisoning from Outback.

and even if i didn't that place sucks. also, i have a ban on texas-themed restaurants, so no lone star, either.
(not bush related, just don't like texas themed places. i have one exception - z tejas (not that anyone cares). my ban does cause me to miss out on places where you can throw peanuts on the floor, unfortunately)

It's a miracle no food poisoning for you from your ham sandwich stretch in 2003.

But yes, this is terrible.

the lady that runs our office just shook her head whren I told her about the new regulations concerning food to the poor. She is very involved in her church's efforts to feed the hungry and asked me exactly who will benefit? the people that wil no longer receive food?
